Hanareyama: A Short, Dog-friendly Hike in Karuizawa

Hanareyama sits between Kyu-Karuizawa and Naka-Karuizawa, and it's one of the easiest hikes in the area. At just over 1,200 metres, this is a quick outing rather than a full day in the mountains, well suited to hikers and dogs of most fitness levels. Free parking is available at the base of the trailhead.

Going up takes roughly 45 to 60 minutes; coming down, closer to 30 to 45. The path is rarely steep, aside from an optional staircase near the summit, so walkers who'd rather skip the climbing can take the gradual route instead.

Much of the trail runs under tree cover, keeping things cooler on hot summer days - an advantage when the open trails nearby start to feel exposed.

From the summit, Karuizawa and the surrounding valley open up below, with Mt. Asama visible in the distance. On a clear day the view reaches further still, out toward the neighbouring ranges.

Snow rarely settles for long here, since the elevation is low. That makes Hanareyama a reliable choice in the shoulder seasons, when higher trails nearby may still be closed or difficult underfoot.

Dogs are welcome, but must stay on a lead throughout. Bring extra water on warm days for your dog as well as yourself. There's plenty of shade, but the climb still takes effort out of a dog that isn't used to hiking.

It's a good fit for a short morning walk, a break between errands in town, or a first taste of hiking for a dog still new to trails. Not much time, not much difficulty, and a proper view of Karuizawa waiting at the top.
